Sprained Ankle

Injuries to the ankle ligaments are possibly the most common injury seen by Physiotherapists. Damage to the ligaments on the outside of ankle are most often caused by rolling the foot outwards during a trip or a slip which may, or may not, involve a forceful pointing downward of the toes.

Ligaments are strong bands of connective tissue that connect bone to bone, and prevent excessive movement. The outside of the ankle has three separate ligaments and depending on the severity of injury, one, two or all three can be damaged. These injuries are graded 1-3, dependant on the level of ligament ‘tearing’.

However, despite the “sprained ankle” being a “common” injury. If left untreated can result in chronic pain, stiffness and the loss of ankle movement.

Assessment of a sprained ankle is also advised to rule out other causes of ankle pain such fractures, tears or ruptures to the surrounding muscles and tendons

Clinical Signs

  • Swelling.
  • Bruising (this may track down towards your toes).
  • Pain and tenderness on the outside OR inside of the ankle.
  • Unable to put all your weight on the foot.

Treatment

With the help of Physiotherapy treatment and advice we will make sure that your recovery is fast and appropriate to prevent re-injury.

  • In the early stages, Physiotherapy will be used to reduce pain and restore ankle mobility.
  • Techniques to do this include Rest Ice Compression Elevation, Electrotherapy, soft tissue mobilisation, targeted stretches and strengthening drills.
  • As pain settles, Physiotherapy techniques will target strength, flexibility and balance losses. These elements of rehabilitation are vital to allow a risk free return to function.
  • Specific rehabilitation drills including sport specific drills will ultimately allow a return to full sport.
